An Active Cell means the cell chosen at that time on a spreadsheet. It can be identified with a bold (which is typically blue) outline, and it is spread around that cell.
If you want to know the current location of an active cell, the most standard way is to look at the column/row combination of that cell, such as A2 (first column, second row) or B5 (second column, fifth row).
Whenever you click on a specific cell in a spreadsheet, it becomes an active cell. While once you select a cell, you can add values or a function to that cell.
Most spreadsheet programs display the value of an active cell within a long text field within the same cell in the spreadsheet toolbar. The text field is very helpful for viewing and modifying the function and editing long text strings that are not properly fit on the active cell.
Most spreadsheet applications allow you to define a specific type of data in individual cells. So in such a situation, you can use the cell formatting option in the toolbar or select Format → Cells… from the menu bar, then select the data type from the active cell.
For example, if the item on the active cell has a price, and that’s where you want to select the “Currency” data type. Here, if you want, you can format the appearance of an active cell, for which you have to select font, text colour, background colour, and text styles.
In most cases, a spreadsheet contains only one active cell at a time. However, if you want, you can also select multiple cells, for which you have to drag the cursor over that group of cells.
In such a case, all the selected cells are considered active cells. On the other hand, if you change the cell formatting options when multiple cells are selected, these changes are displayed on all active cells.
NOTE When you are writing a function in Microsoft Excel, these ActiveCell properties can be used to reference an active cell. The value of the active cell can be accessed using ActiveCell.Value.
